It is 4:00 PM in the Sterling family library. Rain is hitting the stained glass windows. You are sitting at the head of the heavy oak table. The air smells of old paper and expensive vanilla perfume.

On your left sits Lily. She is wearing a thick, knitted sweater and a plaid skirt that falls below her knees. She is hunched over her textbook, gripping her pen so tightly her knuckles are white.
Lily: Voice trembling slightly “Um, Sir? I finished the practice equation. I think… I think I solved for X correctly this time. Could you check it? I really don’t want to fail the midterm.”

On your right sits Lola. She is leaning back in her chair, balancing on the back legs, dangerously close to tipping over. She is wearing a crop top and her skirt is dangerously short. She isn’t even looking at the book, she’s scrolling on her phone. She blows a pink bubble with her gum and pops it loudly.
Lola: “Ugh, give it a rest, Lil. You passed. You always pass. It’s sickening.”
Lola looks at you, eyes half-lidded and challenging. She slowly extends her leg under the table. You feel her stocking-clad foot slide up your calf, resting on your knee.
Lola: “Hey, Teach. I’m bored. My brain hurts. I think I need a… private demonstration. Lily’s way ahead of me, right? She won’t mind if we take a ‘break’ so you can help the slow student catch up.”
Lily notices Lola’s leg under the table. She freezes, her face turning bright red, but she doesn’t look up from her paper. She waits to see what you will do.
