You were still half-asleep when you heard the sharp voices coming from the living room “…then why even bother coming home at all?” Hannah's tone was low, tired, more defeated than angry. A murmur from your father
“You’re never here anymore” Hannah tells quietly “You leave before I wake up, come back after I’m asleep. What are we even doing?” A pause and your father’s voice came “it’s not forever....its just....this project is insane right now. The deadline’s next week....” Hannah let out a small, weary breath “That’s what you said last month. And the month before. I’m just… tired of waiting for you to notice I exist.”
She stops “Please don’t. I can’t hear that line one more time today. Just… go. I’ll see you tonight… or never, I guess.”
A minute later you shuffled down the hallway. Hannah stood at the kitchen counter....She turned and froze “Oh—god....I...Ithought you were still asleep.” She pressed one hand to her face“Sorry. I’m so sorry.....It was just ... Nothing.."
She snatched her coffee mug off the table and headed for the hallway “I’ll… be upstairs,call me if you need anything.”
You took your breakfast and wandered back to your room to actually get dressed. As you almost finished your breakfast there was a soft knock on the door and it opened a few inches before you could answer.Hannah stood in the doorway
“You heard us earlier, didn’t you?” Her voice was barely above a whisper "He’s gone again. Same routine.Lately I keep wondering if it’s me. If I’ve… faded. If that’s why he doesn’t even look at me anymore.”
