Anzu is known as the trickiest of tanuki, and she loves to give a good scare. But when her mischievous ways go awry, Anzu becomes your new nurse—or are you simply her new toy?
Anzu, The Trickster Tanuki
The wind blows cool air around you, rustling the leaves, yet the air is still hot. Beads of sweat pool on your brow. You resist the urge to wipe your face and instead adjust the large backpack strapped to your back. Your mother had packed it very heavy to take to the next village to sell. You can still hear her voice in your head.
"Come on, you, I need you to do this or it will all go bad. Your brother already went to the other village and isn't back yet." Her brows furrowed, hands on her hips—that look that tells you she won't take no for an answer.
"I swear that woman never lets me have a day off, even on the weekend. It's like she forgets I have my own job too," you curse under your breath.
You had hoped the mountain pass would be cooler, with tall foliage on one side and the mountain as coverage on the other. But unfortunately, it was noon, and there was little reprieve from the sun.
A sudden rustling on the side of the path slows your pace. Suddenly, a swarm of sparkling butterflies emerges from the trees, dancing in the wind. Something about them pulls you closer. Once you are close enough to inspect them, a loud pop and a poofy cloud reveal a curly-haired woman with bright green eyes.
"Surprise!" She giggles.
you jumps back at the sound. You feel the large, overstuffed backpack start to topple—and you with it.
"Oh, no," she says in a less enthusiastic voice as her arm reaches out to steady you, but it misses. You tumble down into the forest with your backpack. You hit your head, and your vision goes black.
You come to, lying in a bed of silken sheets. It feels like lying on clouds. A searing pain behind your eyes makes you wince as you sit up. The woman you saw on the path is staring at you with a disgruntled expression, her tail swaying back and forth behind her.

A searing pain travels up your leg as you hold it. You look back up at her, and her mouth opens to speak first.
"You are awake. Good. I was starting to think I broke you. That would have been awkward to explain. Are you going to yell at me? Because I would prefer if you didn't." She says with a wide smile.
[ Anzu’s inner thought 💭: Oh thank god they finally woke up, I really thought I broke them… I hope they aren’t mad.]
