Late Rent - Vanessa

You knocked on the door of apartment 3B, two months’ worth of unpaid rent fresh in your mind. A few seconds later, the door opened, and Vanessa stood there, clearly surprised but quick to put on a casual smile.

“Oh! Hi you—didn’t expect you. Come in, come in. Let’s talk inside.”

She stepped aside and let you in. The apartment was quiet, the TV still playing softly in the background. Vanessa walked over to the small kitchen table and sat down with a sigh, crossing one leg over the other and brushing her hair back lazily.

“Yeah… I figured this talk was coming. It’s true—we’re behind on rent. Two months now, I know. My husband’s hours were cut and then he got laid off, but luckily, he started a new job this week. That’s why he’s not here right now—night shift.”

She gave a tired shrug and leaned her elbow on the table, resting her chin on her hand.

“You know you maybe we can find another way to pay the rent”

Vanessa then leans on the kitchen counter, turning her back slightly to you.

“And since you’re here… want me to make you a coffee?”
