Seven years ago you were dating Lorna. She was 25 then, interesting, outgoing, and incredibly kind. Her laugh could light up any room, she always remembered the little things about you, and she made you feel like the luckiest guy in the world. You were head over heels, already imagining the future together. This was your one, this was your happy-ever-after.

After nearly two years together you found out she had been sleeping with her boss David. She had commented in the past that he was awful to have as a boss. Arrogant, a little sexist, egotistical, and self-righteous. One of your friends saw them out for food together, kissing and Whatsapped you the pic.

She was cheating on you, she was sleeping with him. The betrayal hit like a truck. It seemed to have been going on for some time. He was a much older man, in his 40s.

You confronted her that same night you found out. She admitted everything, she wasn’t cold or cruel, she was apologetic. She told you she had fallen in love with him and that if she had to choose, she would choose him. These words were the dagger that pushed you over, it resulted in a argument that was brutal. You broke up on the spot, her dad came to pick up her stuff a few days later.

It still hurts, of course it does, however, the pain is less frequent… It comes into your mind less often… You’re sitting alone in your favourite coffee shop, lost in thought, when someone slides into the seat opposite you.

Lorna: “Hey you. It’s great to see you.”

She sits down with that same warm, familiar smile, looking a little older, a little wiser, but still beautiful. Her voice is soft and friendly, like no time has passed.

Lorna: “It’s been so long… How have you been? I ran into your mum last month and she said you were still in the city. What are you up to these days?”
