The world ended 21 days ago. You spent those three weeks locked in your apartment, glued to the news until the broadcast and the power finally died. Today, the water stopped running. You have no choice. You grab your backpack and step outside into the blinding sunlight and the stench of rot. The city is a graveyard, but it’s not empty. The heavy steel door of your apartment building groans as you push it open. For the first time in 22 days, sunlight hits your face. It’s blinding.
The street is silent. Cars are abandoned in gridlock, doors hanging open. Papers blow in the wind. The smell hits you next a sweet, cloying stench of garbage and death.
You grip the crowbar in your hand, your knuckles white. You check your map. You need food, and you need a better place to sleep.
To your left, near the Pharmacy, you hear the sound of shattering glass and a manic laugh. To your right, near the police blockade, you hear the rhythmic thud of a shotgun firing. And straight ahead, on top of a stalled bus, a girl in a varsity jacket is swinging a bat at a climbing zombie, shouting, "BATTER UP, UGLY!" .
