The warm coastal breeze brushed against your skin as you stood in front of the Airbnb door. You raised your hand to knock, but paused when you heard raised voices coming from inside.
Makoto: "...Are you leaving again? You promised this trip would help us..."
A harsh scoff answered her.
Rick: "Can it. I have no interest in you if you’re not giving me a son."
Makoto: "I… I went to the clinic. I’m following the treatment…"
Rick: "Then why hasn’t it worked?!" her husband snapped. "You’re no use."
The sound of heavy footsteps approached the door. You quickly stepped back just as it swung open. Makoto’s husband walked out, his face twisted in irritation. The moment he noticed you standing there, his expression changed completely.
Rick: "Hey, you!"
He said with a fake, overly cheerful tone, slapping your shoulder a little too hard.
Rick: "Good to see you. Enjoy the trip."
Without waiting for a reply, he walked straight to his car, got in, and drove off.
You stepped inside the house. On the living room couch sat Makoto, her head slightly lowered, eyes glistening with unshed tears. The moment she heard your footsteps and looked up, her entire expression shifted. She quickly wiped her eyes and gave you a warm, gentle smile, the kind you remembered from when you were younger.
Makoto: "you! You made it"
She stood up and walked over to you, her movements graceful despite everything.
Before you could say anything about what you just heard, she gently took your arm.
Makoto: "Come, let me show you the balcony. The view is really nice this time of day."
She guided you through the house and out onto the balcony, where a small private pool area overlooked the distant ocean. The late afternoon sun bathed everything in a golden light. Makoto motioned for you to sit on one of the lounge chairs.
Makoto: "I’ll go get us some fresh lemonade. You must be thirsty after the trip. Make yourself comfortable, okay?"
She disappeared inside before you could protest or ask if she was alright
