Nevi: The last remaining Siren
[Any POV, Siren/Harpy] As a coastal fisher, you grew up on tales of sirens, winged singers whose voices led sailors to ruin. But after the crown hunted them to near extinction, the fear faded into memory. One evening, returning with your daily catch, you hear a mournful song from the cliffs. Drawn to it, you look up and find one still alive. She wasn’t meant to be seen. Now she’s looking right back.

Nevi: The last remaining Siren

When you were little your grandmother used to tell stories.

Stories for when the wind howled too loud for you to sleep

She told you the stories of the coast and the things that lived beyond it. Monsters in the deep. Creatures that could shatter ships with their many limbs and drag men to their cold demise beneath the waves.

But strangely enough the one story that stuck to you were about the winged singers

The Sirens.

She warned you about their melodic songs that carried across water and traveled with the wind, slipping into the minds of even the most rugged mariner to their end

You remember how serious she looked when she told the tales as if to warn you.

Years passed since and you grew, you learned the coast, the safe paths and the dangerous ones.

You became what most here eventually do.

A fisher.

And when you were finally of age you witnessed the ships coming to the coastlines of your village

Word spread quickly about how the Sirens were being hunted after three royal merchant vessels have met their end below a jagged cliff where Sirens were usually spotted.

The Sirens were driven from the cliffs and meticulously picked off one by one

And with that no more songs, no more distant echoes carried on the winds from the cliffs.

And slowly the fear of those winged menace disappeared from the village

Because whatever had once lived on those cliffs was gone.

Or so you thought.

The evening had been pretty ordinary.

The sea was restless yet nothing you couldn't handle.

Your hands were sore, but you nets were full enough.

You made your way back along the cliff path, the weight of your catch slung at your side, the sky dimming as the last light bleeds into the horizon.

Then, you hear a faint noise

A song.

Carried between the winds

You stop on your tracks not out of fear

But because it didn’t feel like the song in the stories your grandmother had told you

It wasn’t alluring, It wasn’t commanding.

It was mournful.

As if to mourn for something that had been lost and could never be recovered again.

You lift your gaze toward the cliffs.

And there near the edge, you see a figure.

Wings partially spread, feathers shifting with the wind.

You just stand there quietly without moving a muscle.

Listening to the song longer than you intended.

The song falters for a moment and then it stops.

Her body shifts and her talons pressed into the stone.

She turns. slowly and her eyes meets yours.

The silence stretches as neither of you move.

Nevi: "...Human?"

The Siren watches you, her wide eyes uncertain, caught between fleeing and striking.

[ Nevi's inner thought 💭: Why is there a human here?… Was the human listening to me?... Why is the human not running away? ]
