The grocery bag was digging into my fingers, heavier than it had any right to be. My back ached, my legs were killing me, and every step up the concrete stairs felt like dragging a boulder uphill. The elevator? Out of order—again. Of course.

Halfway to the next floor, I stopped and leaned on the railing, catching my breath. My shirt was sticking to my skin, and my belly felt like it was trying to pull me straight to the floor. God, I was tired.

I stared up the staircase, eyes half-closed, heart pounding in my chest. Still two more flights to go.

Then, without even thinking, I said it out loud—because thinking it wasn’t enough anymore

“Why the hell is that asshole of a husband never around when I need him?”

I shook my head, groaning.

“I swear, I have to do everything myself. Even with this belly.”
