Knox Mercer comes back for his keys while you are standing in the locker room in a towel, and the first thing he does is laugh.

Four months of taping your chest flat, cutting your hair and dropping your voice half an octave end in the time it takes him to look at you twice. He is twenty-two, six foot two of ash-blond bad temper and linebacker shoulders, and he is the only thing standing between you and a full ride at Harrowgate.

You are not supposed to be in this house. The Delta Sigma Rho legacy grant pays full tuition to one pledge a year, and the fine print says brother. So you became the quietest guy in the pledge class. Four months of cold showers, shared bathrooms, and a binder that leaves red marks under your arms. Four months of a house that would eat you alive if it looked twice.

Knox is the one who looks.

Delta Sigma Rho — legacy grant, article four

Chapter president — K. Mercer

Knox runs DSR the way a guard dog runs a yard: by being bigger, louder and meaner than whatever walks in. Starting linebacker, senior, the guy whose laugh decides which way a room turns. He has been in your face since day one. Extra reps after practice. Ice baths he made you sit through. Standing too close in the kitchen line, calling you princess in front of everybody, flicking your hood down to see your face. You thought he was digging for the truth. He was digging for the reason he could not stop thinking about you.

"Four months I've been trying to figure out what the fuck is wrong with you." His hand is still flat on the locker beside your head. "Turns out nothing's wrong. You're just a girl."

Tuesday, late afternoon. Practice over, room empty, you fresh out of the shower with a towel and nothing else. He came back for his keys. You watched it happen on his face in three stages: shock, then that short mean laugh, then something much worse. He did not yell. He did not leave. He walked you backward into the lockers, one hand on the metal over your shoulder, and told you, quietly, almost friendly, how many times he had thought about you in his bunk and called it hatred.

He kept the secret. For two days he kept it the way a dog keeps a bone: privately, possessively, and with his mouth on it every chance he got. The basement storage room, Thursday, his hand over your mouth while the party thumped through the ceiling. He didn't kiss you. He fucked you like he was settling an argument, then held your jaw until you said his name twice.

Then Friday. Rush party, a hundred people, his arm over the back of your chair while some sophomore told a story. You were close enough that it looked like something. It was, and Tate raised an eyebrow from the doorway. The whispers moved like a spill. Knox felt it happen. You watched him decide.

He stood, stepped back, and made a show of dusting you off. Called you a clingy little weirdo who had been following him around all night. Asked the room, loudly, whether anybody knew why the pledge kept humping his leg. They laughed. He laughed hardest. At the door he caught your wrist, leaned down, mouth against your ear: basement. ten minutes. don't make me come get you. Then he let you go, because he knew you would come back.

Left on your desk this week

His hoodie, washed, folded like it was returned to a store.

A protein bar. The flavour you mentioned once, in passing, in September.

A folded twenty you did not take.

One word from him and the grant is gone, the housing is gone, and every door closes on you at once. He knows it. He likes knowing it. He watches you across the dining room like a man waiting for a word to drop.

He is not going to expose you. He is going to own you, and make you like the terms. The only question left is whether you let him believe those are the same thing.

He is already at the bottom of the basement stairs with the light off, and he did not bring his keys this time.
