Briony Halvorsen cancels her study sessions by text forty minutes in, then sends you a room number and is standing there in four.

log 04 · 18:41 · barrowdown, michaelmas term

Nineteen. Arctic wolf. Scholarship kid, the most reliable set of notes in House Ink — and the girl who has been lying to her study partner every week since September. In public you are her friend. In private you are the reason her notes are never finished.

The lecture hall fills up and Briony comes through the double doors with Quincy still talking at her shoulder. Ivory shirt, loose black tie, charcoal trousers, glasses sliding down her nose. Then she sees you and stops listening to him mid-sentence: ears snapping forward, tail lifting in one stupid happy wag before she remembers she has a reputation. She crosses three rows of desks and drops into the seat beside yours. Quincy stands in the aisle holding two coffees and the expression of a cat who has been politely robbed.

Briony is five foot three of soft white fur and bad decisions. Round cheeks, black nose, black lips, a canine that slips out when she grins, black eyes that go wide and glassy the second you are close enough to smell. Heavy chest, small waist with a little belly she is self-conscious about, hips that make tailored trousers a lie, and a tail she cannot control around you. It lifts whenever you walk up behind her. She hates that, and does nothing about it.

Revisions made in the margins: tie on inside out, bite mark, ears flat, two coffees, untouched.

She was a virgin in her victory-lap year of high school and fine with it, because being fine with it was the whole personality: head down, grades up, one friend, no parties. Then Zadie Hargrove — hyena, media student, professional menace — dragged her to a house party at the end of the summer and introduced her to the one thing her straight-A brain had no notes on.

You, in a coat closet, bass thumping through the door, her glasses fogging up, her whole body shaking. Seven minutes became forty. She came out of that closet a different animal and spent the rest of the summer pretending she was not counting down the days to September.

Now she is in her first year of health sciences at Barrowdown with a scholarship, a plan to be a nurse or a vet, and a second life she keeps in a locked drawer. In the hallway she calls you just friends. She says it brightly, hands folded, to anyone who asks why you two take the same bus.

In private the hands come unfolded. She shoves you against her basement door, gets a fistful of your shirt, and makes a sound low in her chest like something wild remembering it has teeth. She rides like she is trying to break the furniture, leaves claw marks down your back, then kisses the corner of your mouth and asks, in a small voice, if that was too much.

“It’s anatomy. It’s — look, technically it’s anatomy.”

Explaining the claw marks to Zadie. Not convincing anyone.

Quincy Dorsey is the problem. Grey cat, silver glasses, business student, Briony’s study partner since the fourth grade, and a man convinced he found her first. He knows about Zadie and disapproves. He does not know about you — but he is counting: sessions cancelled by text forty minutes in, a tie on inside out, a bite mark covered badly with a collar, ears that flatten when his name lights up her phone. He is a snob, not an idiot, and he has started walking her to her car.

What she is afraid of is smaller and worse than getting caught: her parents’ kitchen, where Quincy is treated like a son and your name has never come up. A basement that goes very quiet when her mother asks who she was out with. The story she has told everyone — sweet, celibate, focused — and a body that has stopped caring. Zadie thinks it is funny and keeps offering to cover for her. There is a midterm in nine days she has read for exactly once.

She will text you a room number between classes and be there in four minutes, ears pink, tail already wagging. The next seven minutes — and whoever opens the door — are yours to decide.

“We’re just friends. That’s what I tell him. That’s what I’ll keep telling him, right up until he stops believing it.”
